The
CCV tune-up race is this Sunday and since I have to work anyway, it's not a huge disappointment missing it. The deadline was a bit aggressive and it served it's purpose; it got me moving. Painting was last weeks theme as the weather gave me a great window of warm dry air with no chance of rain. The low humidity helped the paint go on smoothly as I applied Interlux 2000E barrie coats to the hull. With a strong mix of some kinda of primers coating the majority of the bottom I decided to add 3 additional coats to the bottom. Taking the advice of the experts on
Sailing Anarchy's Forums and the
Interlux forum I rolled and tipped the 2000E. I wanted a sprayed finish but after assessing the risks I chose the safer route. The finish came out great, not as smooth as sprayed but really close. I will be taking a run with the 80 grit on the finishing sander to remove some minor blemishes, but I should be spraying Baltoplate next week.

The coats went on slow as it is tedious rolling a neat thin coat and then crossing it with the tip of a paint brush. I am more of a "bull in china shop" type so it was an exercise in patience keeping it neat and clean. I did it, but it took about 4 hours per coat. Some lessons learned. Use a 3/4 mat roller from a hardware store versus the West System foam roller. The foam roller gunked up and the finish was not as good as the regular roller. Use a high quality brush for your tipping brush, with a tapered edge. The 2000E likes to load up so have a little thinner handy to clean up the tipping brush. Take your time. It was a 60 degree day and I had plenty of time to paint. 4 hours / coat and the paint was fine to work with through the entire process.

I also applied the 2000E to the mast as recommended on the Interlux forum as an etching coat. The next step is the primer and Interlux's Perfection White for the final coat. I already like the white base coat. I thinned the 2000E 30% as recommended and it applied well. It also was useable much longer than the non-thinned mix. After our conference this weekend the priorities are:
1) Mount the speed and depth sensors.
2) Spray Baltoplate on the bottom.
3) Barrier coat / Baltoplate under trailer pads.
4) Install fuel tank - get diesel running.
5) Fix tires and inspect bearing on trailer.
6) Launch - Rigging work to follow.
