After such a great day last Sunday, this Sunday delivered humility. It was blowing and I was not ready for it. The crew did a great job and I hated to disappoint, but I have some heavy-air driving practice to do.
It started when leaving the dock. The little bit of sail area that hung from the boom to the deck was enough to push us onto my neighbors and knock my confidence. We tied the main up on the boom and got the boat going. Put the main up and followed the others to the starting area.
With just the main up we were moving. Downwind to the race committee it was harder to keep the wind angle off the stern. We put a jibe in and I drove it up. Knock #2 to my confidence. The final knock came when we met a couple of racers at the committee boat and had to thread the needle. While I avoided any contact, I was not in control of the boat. Let's not race today.
While awaiting the results to be posted, I must express my sincere admiration to those who were able to successfully compete in the breezey conditions. Great job guys! I plan to practice heavy-air sailing at every opportunity. TFGRT!
